She was the daughter of Franklin Pad "Cad" Jones and Ruth C. Hill. She married Henry Clairborne Pierce on 07 September 1904. During pregnancy, Essie came down with diphtheria and bronchitis. In the advance stages of pregnancy, she delivered her baby and died shortly thereafter from heart failure. Her newborn baby lived one day and then passed away. Both Essie and her newborn were thought to buried together.
