Joseph Valentine came to Ontario, Canada from Belfast, N. Ireland in 1832 with his father, George Valentine, and siblings, after his mother (unknown) passed away. The family settled in Pickering near a hill that become known as Valentine's Hill. On January 27, 1845, Joseph Valentine married Hannah McAvoy (or McEvoy, the spelling differs by record) in Toronto at the St. James Cathedral.
They moved soon afterward to Reach Township where Joseph was a farmer. Joseph Valentine and Hannah McAvoy had twelve children: William Henry, Elizabeth Anne, James Wellington, Hannah Maria, Thomas Albert, Joseph John, George Wetherell, Christopher Gibson, Richard Dale, Mary Ann, Susan Jane, Sarah Priscilla, Alfred Wesley, and Lucy Clara. His wife, Hannah, preceded him in death in 1879.
