Emily Shriner was born in Maryland on September 12, 1825, the daughter of George Michael Shriner and Anna Catherine Hollenberger. She married Josiah Valentine on October 16, 1845, in Carroll County, Maryland. They were the parents of 5 children: Milton Oliver, Martha Ellen, Albert Curtis, Emma C. and Harvey T. Valentine. Emily passed away on August 22, 1907, in Walkersville, Frederick County, and was buried on the 25th in Union Chapel Cemetery there.

Obituary for Emily Shriner Valentine from the Frederick Daily News of August 23, 1907:

"MRS. JOSIAH VALENTINE. Mrs. Emily Valentine, wife of Mr. Josiah Valentine, died at 11 o'clock last night at the home of her daughter, Mrs. John D. Zimmerman, at Walkersville, of general debility, aged 83 years. Besides her husband, she is survived by two sons and two daughters: Milton O. Valentine, of near Libertytown; Albert C. Valentine, of York, Pennsylvania; Mrs. John D. Zimmerman, of Walkersville, and Mrs. Daniel Eyler, of York, Pennsylvania. The funeral will take place on Sunday morning, leaving the house at 9 o'clock. Services will be held in Union Chapel, near Liberty, where interment will be made."
