Tillie was born in the town of Snovsk, pronounced as Snufsk. After WWII it was named for a Russian officer, Shchors. After Ukraine gained its independence, the town name was restored to Snovsk. She immigrated to the United States and moved to Chicago, living near her brother Harry, sister Goldie, and their mother. She was a seamstress and worked in the garment industry. Because she was fluent in many languages including, English, Yiddish, Russian, Polish, Romanian, and Czech, she was able to communicate with most employees, and was promoted to floor supervisor. A proud Wobbly, in the 1920's she participated in several garment worker strikes and was arrested.
