Jacob immigrated to the United States from Poland early in the 1900's, and anglicized his name to Gershon. He lived with relatives in New York City, and later Chicago. He tried several times to enlist for World War I, but couldn't pass the physical. He became a baker like his father, joining the Baker and Confectionery Workers International Union of America, Local One. He worked for S. Rosen's Bakery, and later Burny Bros. Bakery, until he retired.
