Vernice 'Ray' Hawkins SIMPSON - Mr. Vernice "Ray" Hawkins passed Thursday, March 19, 2009 in Greenville. Funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, March 26, at Phillippi MB Church, 2665 W. Virginia St., Simpson. Burial will follow at Homestead Memorial Gardens, U.S. Highway 33, Greenville. Mr. Hawkins was born in Pitt County on July 15, 1943, to Ethel Mae Chapman Hawkins of Simpson and the late Vernice Lee "Monk" Hawkins. He was a 1961 graduate of Pitt County Training School, and furthered his education at Pitt Community College. Vernice served in the United States Army for two years and continued service in the N.C. Army National Guard. He was a member of Phillippi Missionary Baptist Church where he faithfully served as an usher. Ray leaves to mourn his wife, Brenda Gatlin Hawkins; one son, Quency Hawkins of Raleigh; his mother, Ethel Mae Chapman Hawkins of Simpson; three brothers, Carlton Hawkins and wife, Lillie, of Long Island, N.Y., Eddie Hawkins and wife, Brenda, of Grimesland, and Kelly Hawkins of Simpson; two sisters, Margie Green and Regina Hopkins of Simpson; and a host of relatives and friends. A walk-thru will be held at the church today from 5-8 p.m. Family and friends may be received at the home. Professional services entrusted to Rountree Family Mortuary & Cremation Services, Greenville.
