Professional Football Player. For five seasons (1969 to 1973), he played at the linebacker position in the American and National Football Leagues with the Miami Dolphins. Raised in Spur, Texas where he attended high school, he played collegiate football at West Texas A&M with whom he distinguished himself. Selected by Miami during the 1969 Draft, he appeared in 56 regular season games and was a contributor to the Dolphins' squad which achieved a perfect season of 17 and 0 in 1972, culminating with their clinching of the Super Bowl VII title in January of 1973. After retiring from football, he worked for a food supply company and later in the insurance industry. He was named to the West Texas A&M Hall of Champions in 1988. In recent years, Powell had been suffering from neurological issues.
