Major League Baseball Player. For ten seasons (1957 to 1958, 1961 to 1967, 1969 to 1970), he played at the catcher and outfielder positions with the Milwaukee Braves, New York Mets, California Angels and Kansas City Royals. Born Robert Dale Taylor, he attended Metropolis Community High School (Illinois) where he was a multi-sport athlete who excelled in baseball, basketball, football and track, prior to being signed as an amateur free agent by Milwaukee in 1957. He marked his Major League debut with the Braves on June 9th 1957 and appeared in 7 games (primarily as a defensive replacement) with the Milwaukee squad which captured the World Series that year. He experienced the Braves run at their second consecutive National League Pennant in 1958, as he played in 4 games that season. While with the Mets during the 1964 season, Taylor yielded career-highs in games with 92 and hits with 54. He held the distinction as being a member of the Kansas City Royals during their inaugural year of 1969. In 394 regular season games, he compiled 158 hits with a .218 lifetime batting average. After retiring from baseball, he attained a masters degree. He coached and taught on the both the collegiate and high school levels, in addition to working in the insurance industry. In recent years, Taylor suffered from a variety of health issues including an irregular heart beat and gallbladder problems.
