Author. Best known for abundantly compact fictional works from historical periods. Born the son of a coal miner, in the Northeastern-England town of Wingate. He received his undergraduate degree in English from the University of Manchester and following service in the British Army, with whom he was a second lieutenant in the Royal Corps of Signals, he embarked upon a career as a lecturer which took him throughout Europe. When his attempts to become a writer of short stories failed, he turned to novels and yielded his first effort "The Partnership" (1966), a tale tainted with controversy about two male business partners, one with an erotic attraction towards the other. He enjoyed commercial success with "Pascali's Island" (1980), a story about the Ottoman Empire which earned him a nomination for the Man Booker Prize Best Novel. A 1988 motion picture adaptation was made starring Ben Kingsley. Unsworth received The Man Booker Prize for "Sacred Hunger" (1992) and had a bestseller with "Morality Play" (1995), the later was made into a feature film adaptation in 2003 titled "The Reckoning". He earned an additional Mann Booker nomination with "The Ruby in Her Navel" (2006).
