Former President of St. Peter's Fabric and Archbishop of the Titular See of Adrianopoli di Emimonto, Monsignor Lino Zanini was born in Riese, Province of Treviso, Italy, on May 6, 1909, during the Pontificate of Pope Pius X, likewise a native of Riese. Ordained to the priesthood for the Archdiocese of Venice by Cardinal Pietro La Fontaine on July 2, 1933, he served briefly in the parishes of San Giovanni Battista of Jesolo and of Chirignago until 1938, when he entered the diplomatic service of the Holy See.

Named Cameriere Segreto Soprannumerario di Sua Santità with the title of Monsignor by Pope Pius XII on March 3, 1939, he served in the Apostolic Nunciatures of Ecuador, Chile, Peru, Belgium, Luxembourg and Lebanon. After a period at the Vatican Secretariat of State, Pope Pius XII assigned him as Chargé d'Affaires and successively Internuncio for the Apostolic Internunciature of Iran, while his successor, Pope John XXIII named him Apostolic Nuncio in the Dominican Republic on June 16, 1959. Zanini received his episcopal consecration with the Titular See of Hadrianopolis in Haemimonto on the following September 3, from Cardinal Giovanni Urbani assisted by Bishops Antonio Mistrorigo and Giuseppe Olivotti in the parish church of his native Riese, on the liturgical feast day of Saint Pius X.

Appointed official of the Secretariat of State of the Holy See in 1961, the following year he was named Apostolic Delegate for Jordan, Cyprus, Jerusalem and Palestine, where on January 4, 1964, he welcomed Pope Paul VI as the first Pontiff on pilgrimage to the Holy Land. Internuncio and later Pro-Nuncio in Egypt between January 4, 1966 and May 7, 1969, he was successively appointed Apostolic Nuncio in Argentina.

On December 20, 1973, after 35 years in the diplomatic service of the Holy See, Archbishop Zanini was appointed Apostolic Delegate for St. Peter's Patriarchal Vatican Basilica, Delegate and President of St. Peter's Fabric and President for the Studio del Mosaico. He furthermore served as President of the Commissione Permanente per la Tutela dei Monumenti Storici ed Artistici della Santa Sede between 1986 and 1989.

As President of St. Peter's Fabric, Monsignor Zanini worked for the restoration of the Basilica. It is thanks to him that every year, millions of pilgrims from around the world can access the Grotto's of St. Peter's Basilica, which he had restored, and pray beside the tombs of numerous Popes. So applies to hundreds of priests who can celebrate Mass beside St. Peter's remains. Pilgrims can pray in the numerous chapels erected in the Grottoes, including the Lithuanian, Polish and Hungarian chapels, while they can also climb easily to the Basilica's dome thanks to the instalment of elevators which he took care of.

Archbishop Zanini retired from office at 80 years of age on May 15, 1989. He died in Rome during the early hours of October 25, 1997, aged 88. His funeral Mass, which was held at St. Peter's Patriarchal Vatican Basilica on October 27, presided by Cardinal Virgilio Noé, Archpriest of St. Peter's Basilica, President of St. Peter's Fabric and Vicar General of His Holiness for the Vatican City, saw the participation among others of Cardinal Andrzej Maria Deskur, Archbishop John Patrick Foley, Bishops Pierfranco Pastore, Remigio Ragonesi, Luigi Sposito and Cipriano Calderòn Polo along with the canons of the Chapter of St. Peter's Basilica.

Originally interred the cemetery of his native Riese, which was by now renamed Riese Pio X, at a later date his remains were transferred to the Santuario della Beata Vergine delle Cendrole, where he now rests.
