Viola B. Andrew served as a secretary in the Finance Department of former Cleveland Mayor Harold Burton. Then, for 36 years, she was executive secretary in the Finance Department of the former True Temper Corp., a garden tools manufacturer.
She retired in 1972, several years before the company was sold to Wilkonson Match Ltd.
Mrs. Andrew, 89, died Wednesday at Elyria United Methodist Village, where she had lived since the mid-1980s. She had been a longtime resident of Rocky River.
Her first job was with Black & Decker, where she had worked for three years in the domestic electric division. Her husband, John, who died in 1973, was an engineer with Black & Decker; he put a motor on her typewriter, which was known as the first electric typewriter in this area.
She attended the Cleveland College of the Western Reserve.
Mrs. Andrew was a member of the Brooklyn chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star.
She was also a member of Lakewood United Methodist Church, where she was part of the Benedict's class, the Martha Circle and the Wesleyans. She served as president of the Wesleyan Service Guild for several years.
She was also a member of the Lakewood Genealogy Society at the Lakewood Public Library and a contributing member of the Rocky River Library.
Mrs. Andrew is survived by nieces, Ellen Parker of Omaha, Neb., and Sharon Cassone of Okala, Fla.
Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Busch-Saxton-Parker-Daniels Funeral Chapel, 15800 Detroit Ave., Lakewood.
