Jefferson Ayers was born in Carroll County, Ohio, on August 20, 1835, a son of Jeremiah and Margaret Hodge Ayers. He became a resident of Wirt County in 1853. He was united in marriage with Mary Jane Sheppard in Wirt County on the 30th of January, 1857. They were the parents of six children: Cornelia, born June 23, 1858; Margaret J. March 23, 1860; Jonathan L., Feb.5, 1862; Martha C., July 29, 1866; Price, June 29, 1870; and Iva L., Dec. 2, 1876.
During the war between the States, Jefferson Ayers served two years in the Confederate Army, a member of Company F, l7th Virginia Cavalry.
He was a farmer and miller.
