Legend has it that the Ignatz and family first began farming in Milwaukee on the northside near the river and the old brewery. However, the river flooded out their homes and they had to walk all the way from there to Wilson Township in Sheboygan County with their possessions in hand, where they were taken in probably by relatives and/or friends. They were soon back to farming in Wilson, where they helped pioneer the town and the Catholic Church along with other families, such as the Haen families from the town of Wetten near Dusseldorf in northwestern Germany.
