Pietro Balbo was the son of Rosa Spinelli and stepson of Salvatore Focarile. He had arrived from Italy about 1876 and was a cement worker on the Brooklyn Bridge

He was executed for murdering his wife, Maria diCicco Balbo, on September 30, 1879. He maintained his innocence saying he was trying to prevent her from hurting him and didn't mean to kill her.
.
Despite his murder conviction he was given a very large and well attended funeral by the Italian community who felt that his execution should have been commuted by the governor.
