Carolyn Slough Rader, 70, of Buena Vista, Virginia, passed away Tuesday, December 6, 2011 at her home after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

She was born August 11, 1941 in Buena Vista, a daughter of the late Lawrence E. Slough, Sr. and Margaret McClough Slough Humphries.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Cheryl Lynn Rader; a step-father, Dennie Humphries; and five sisters, Dorothy Brown, Patsy Cole, Marguerite Wolfe, Jeanett Slough, and Peggy Baker.

Carolyn was a longtime member of the St. John's United Methodist Church in Buena Vista, holding several positions including secretary of Sunday school.

She retired from Virginia Military Institute, where she worked in the Chaplin's Office and the Band Director's Office.

Surviving are her husband, Frank Rader of Buena Vista; son, Frankie Rader of Kennesaw, GA; one brother, Lawrence (Sonny) Slough and wife, Helen of Buena Vista; one sister, Faye Cudd and husband Marvin of Fayetteville, NC; step brothers, Lawrence and Odell Humphries; one granddaughter, Morgan Victoria Snelling-Rader; numerous nieces and nephews; special great nephew and great niece, Dallas and Kelsey Cole, whom she considered to be more like her grand kids; and her faithful and special Golden Retriever, Maggie.

A funeral service will be conducted 11 a.m. Thursday, December 8, 2011 at St. John's United Methodist Church with the Pastor John Choi officiating. Burial will follow at the Green Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Cheryl Lynn Rader Memorial Scholarship Fund, James Madison University Foundation, 220 University Boulevard, Suite 3100, Harrisonburg, VA 22807.

Arrangements are being handled by Bolling, Grose, & Lotts Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Buena Vista, VA.
