A Life Remembered ~ Daniel DeClark

The following information was contributed by Carole Nurmi Cummings, his ninth great granddaughter and a Dutch descendant from the 1600s.

"Daniel Clark, John Vrie, Adrian Lamment, Cornelis Claues, Hybert Gerritts, Johannes Geritts, John Straitmaker, Claues Degroot, Gerritt Slynments, Claues Maurelle, Lamant Adrians, Cornelis Van Voort" listed in a "Warrant to Sheriff Minny Johannes of Orange County to ArrestTrespassers from East New Jersey" among the "Inhabitants upon or Neare Tapan Creek" who were "disturbed and disquieted in their Lawfull Possessions, by Persons from the Government of East New Jersey."

The warrant was signed by Thomas Dongan, the Governor of the Province of New York.

Although they were described as "Inhabitants," some of the individuals (they were all shareholders in the Tappan Patent) have not been found in other records to confirm they actually lived there.

"On June 3rd, 1689, Captain Jacob Leisler seized the government of the province of New York and held it until the arrival of Governor Sloughter in March, 1691. During the ascendancy of Leisler's party, Orange County was first granted representation in the provincial government. A Committee of Safety was elected by Leisler's orders, consisting of ten men, three of whom acted for Orange County, viz.: Daniel De Clark, Tunis Roeloffsen Van Houten and William Lawrence."

▪ Recites: That Aryen Lambertson (Smith), one of the sixteen patentees of Tappan, conveyed by deed dated 4 Aug 1688, to Cornelius Barentse Vander Weyck all that certain tract being the 1/16th part of the land called Tappan.... except a small neck of land given by the said Aryen Lambertsen to Teys Servaes (Flierboom) being about three acres.
▪ That Cornelius Barentse Vander Weyck by deed dated 14 Jun 1700, conveyed to John Dircksen Straatmaker of Bergen County a portion of the above premises being one lot of meadow and two lots bounded: S. by John D. Straatmaker, N. by Cornelius Arison, deceased, E. by a slip of land also of the heirs of Cornelius Arisen (Smith)
▪ This deed now conveys all of the said 1/16th part of the land called Tappan, except:
I. The small slip given by Aryen Lambertson to Teys Servaes,
II. The one lot one lot of meadow and two lots of land granted to John Dircksen Straatmaker.
