Elvin Sam "Pickles" Mayer, age 96, of Toledo, Ohio, died Wednesday, January 30, 2007, at Lake Park located at Flower Hospital. He was born in Toledo, Ohio, on September 9, 1910, to Henry and Minnie (Reed) Mayer and he later married Gertrude E. Gieser on August 2, 1933, in Angola, Indiana. A WWII Army Veteran, Elvin owned and operated Mayer's Garage for nearly 50 years. He was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church, the Wally Byam Airstream Caravan and he enjoyed building and racing midget cars from which his nickname began as "Pickles". He is survived by his loving wife of 73 years, Gertrude Gieser Mayer; sister, Iness Reiner; as well as many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Minnie Reed; sisters Edith and Twila; as well as his brother, Ross. Family and friends will be received on Thursday from 4-9 p.m. in Neville Funeral Home at Reynolds Corners, 5052 Dorr Street, Toledo where funeral services will be held on Friday, February 2, 2007, at 11 a.m. Burial will follow in Toledo Memorial Park. Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider the American Cancer Society.
