Emil Miller was a musician who played clarinet, travelling across the continent for ~ it has been said ~ approximately ten years with a number of entertainment organizations including circuses, minstrel companies and vaudeville shows. For a number of years he was with Ringling Brothers circus, as well as Weston's Comedians, and Beach & Bower's Minstrels.
At one time, he was a member of the Wisconsin National Guard, First Infantry, and part of the First Regiment band.
Shortly before his death, he had been travelling with Beach & Bower's show, which disbanded due to poor business at or near Peoria, and he became stranded without funds. Papers found on his person showed that two days before his death he had pawned his watch at Burlington, Iowa, and the following day had pawned his clarinet at Monmouth, Illinois. The next morning at about 8 am, he left some of his clothing at the Peoria City Hall, and about an hour later went to the riverfront.
He jumped into a skiff and rowed out into the river, where three men on the river bank witnessed him jump overboard. However, the depth of the water was only three feet, and he stood up with a look of disgust on his face, and determinedly walked into deeper water to his death.
At the time, his wife, Nellie, was ill at her mother's home at Vicksburg, Kalamazoo, Michigan. Nellie was a leading lady in the Weston's Comedians shows.
