Nathaniel Bolton's stepfather, George Smith, moved his family to Indianapolis in 1820 and on 28 January 1822 started the city's first newspaper, The Gazette, of which Bolton became coeditor. He sold his interest in the paper in 1830 and married Sarah Tittle Barrett in 1831. Together they owned and operated a tavern in the area until 1845. Bolton was elected State Librarian in 1851 and then in 1855 he was appointed consul to Geneva, Switzerland by President Franklin Pierce. He remained at this post until 1857 when he became gravely ill and had to return to Indianapolis.∼Aged 56; See Crown Hill page
