Born shortly after his parents emigrated from Sweden in Swan Lake Minnesota. Nels married Charity Adelaide Smith in North Dakota. They had six of their 11 children in North Dakota before they came to homestead in Alberta.

Along with his older brother John they built many of the early buildings in Stettler. Including the Swedish Lutheran Church, the Ransom School and the Big Valley roundabout. In the late 20's many of their older children moved back to the US.
