Jaakko "Jack" Erkkila was the son of Yrjo Kustaa "Gust" Erkkila and Mary Maki. Upon the premature death of his mother, his father remarried to Lyydia Panula.

He was born in Hamilton, Montana.

Jack was a avid outdoors man. He loved to fish and hunt along with his sister, Elmi Marie.

He attended the Bonner Elementary School and graduated from the Missoula High School. After taking a few years off to work in the local lumber industry, Jack attended and graduated from Montana State University with a degree in education.

He married Ruth Howe and had three children: Mary Elizabeth Erkkila Gembus, John Howe Erkkila, and Lynda Erkkila Blake

A member of the U.S. Army Reserves, he served in WWII and stayed in Germany for several months following the end of the war as part of the occupation forces. Afterward, he returned to his family in Polson, MT, where he taught math at Polson high school until he retired in the late 1960s.

Jack died in Montana and is buried at Lake View Cemetery in Polson, MT next to his wife, Ruth.
