Father Alcuin Deck, O.S.B., a founding Benedictine Monk of Marmion Abbey and longtime instructor at Marmion Academy died on Friday, December 19, 2003 at Provena Mercy Hospital in Aurora. He was 91 years old.
He was preceded in death by his parents and all of his eight siblings.
Father Alcuin Deck was born in St. Louis, Missouri on December 9, 1912. He was the eighth of nine children. Father Alcuin professed vows as a Benedictine monk of St. Meinrad Abbey on August 6, 1934. He was ordained a priest by The Most Rev. Joseph E. Ritter, Archbishop of Indianapolis, Indiana on May 30, 1939. After working for a short time as Assistant Director of the Oblate School for Brothers at St. Meinrad Abbey, he was assigned as an instructor to Marmion Military Academy on August 14, 1940. He served on the faculty of Marmion Academy for the next 55 years. During those years he taught the Sciences and Theology but is remembered for the many years when he taught Latin at the Academy. During his life as a monk, he served his brother monks and the wider Marmion family in many capacities. To name a few, he was Subprior, Master of Novices, Director of College Guidance Counseling and Moderator of the Alumni Association. His support of Marmion's athletic teams is legendary. As late as this fall he could still be found cheering on the football team from his golf cart when it played at the Academy stadium.
Father Alcuin served as principal of Marmion Military Academy from 1945 until 1952. In 1959, he was named Vice-Postulator for the cause of beatification of Abbot Columba Marmion, the namesake of Marmion. Abbot Marmion was beatified a Blessed of the Church on September 3, 2000 by Pope John Paul II.
Father Alcuin's body will be received by his monastic community of Marmion on Monday, December 22, 2003 at 4 PM. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 PM in the Abbey Church. The Office of the Dead will be prayed at 6:30 PM.
Visitation will continue Tuesday, December 23, 2003 from 8 AM until the Funeral Mass. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated in the Marmion Abbey Church at 1:30 PM with burial in the Abbey Cemetery immediately after the Mass.
Funeral arrangements were handled by the Daleiden Lake Street Mortuary, 220 N. Lake Street, Aurora, IL, 630-631-5500.
