Won the Oscar for Best Writing for Panic in the Streets (1950). Shared with his wife Edna. He won the Oscar again for Best Writing for Becket (1964).

He also wrote other screenplays for films like: Hour of the Gun (1967) where he played a Denver doctor, The Boston Strangler (1968), Jeremiah Johnson (1972), Luther (1976), Escape to Athena (1979), and The Day Christ Died (1980 TV).
