MY FATHER

When my father William "Bill" Van Duren was born on August 14, 1919, in Everett (Sultan) Washington state, his father, Cornelius "Pop" Van Duren was 50 and his mother, Anna (Antje) Tuinstra Van Duren was 40.

Stats of my father:
Brown hair, Hazel eyes, Height 5'10", Favorite ice cream: Strawberry, Favorite cake: Strawberry shortcake. Hobbies: Bible reading, baking (especially homemade bread), cooking, carpentry, fishing, gardening, playing the harmonica (which he was GREAT at, especially around a camp fire), photography, camping and..."trying" to keep my mother happy. Baptist.
Favorite expression: "Ohhhhh?"

MILITARY INFORMATION
He was drafted into the U.S. Army Air Corp and served from 28 Jul 1941 to his Release Date on 21 Dec 1945. My dad's Army Serial Number was 32165696 [3=drafted, and 2=designates member is from the New York New Jersey area]. His reporting place was Trenton, New Jersey. He rose in the rank to be an Army Tech5, which equates to an Army Corporal today. He had 3 brothers who were also in the Army, including John who was an Army Chaplain, and Neil who advanced to a Chief Warrant Officer (CWO). And Me?I was also in the Military. Army? Nope, I had to be different, I joined the Navy. And then later, I joined the NC Army National Guard Reserve (total service time: almost 16 years).

His basic training (boot camp) was in Ft. Dix, (about 16 miles south of Trenton, New Jersey), and later was transferred via a smelly coal burning train (going thru Spartanburg, South Carolina) to an Cochran Army Air Field*, Bibb County, Georgia. My father CPL. William Van Duren served with the 603 Air Force Band [sic. Army Air Corps] which sometime during 1945, he and his unit transferred to the Valley Forge Army Hospital in Phoenixville Pennsylvania for the band to entertain the wounded serviceman who were being treated there.

On October 5, 1945 my 25 year old father got himself a "war bride", 25 year old mother Georgina Mae (Critchley) Van Duren (my mother), and they lived in a small rented place, near the base, in Phoenixville, Pennsylvania. Their landlady was sweet older women that my parents affectionately called "Grandma Tussy"..(More about their marriage below).

My father CPL William "Bill" Van Duren served as the Army Band driver/chauffeur, manager, and played the French Horn (and probably the harmonica and ocarina, since they were popular in swing and boogie-woogie dance music) for the #603 Air Force Band#[sic. Army Air Corps] at Cochran Army Air Field, Macon, Georgia and then the Valley Forge Army General Hospital Band, Phoenixville, Pennsylvania. But, One of his highlights during his time in at Cochran was him meeting and listening to a concert (out in large open field, I still have my dad's photograph he took), a concert by Roy "Sly" Rogers and the Son's of the Pioneers.

It was initially used for the training of Royal Air Force flying cadets until 1943, then for USAAF pilot training. It was inactivated on 15 December 1945. Today it is used as Middle Georgia Regional Airport. Middle Georgia Regional Airport (between Macon and Warner Robins, Georgia) is a city owned, public use airport located nine nautical miles (10 mi, 17 km) south of the central business district of Macon, a city in Bibb County, Georgia, United States. It is mostly used for general aviation, but is also served by one commercial

My father Bill Van Duren met my mother Georgina Critchley when he attended a dance during the WWII. I don't know if they knew each other before the dance, but, my dad went with one date, but left with another one: My mother. Georgina Critchley had been the date was Ralph Gruble (I believe he much later died in a fire). Sometime during the dance my mom and dad met each other and danced. At the end of the gathering, Army Corporal Van Duren, so handsome in his uniform (my mother just LOVVVVED and melted when she saw a man in uniform) left with the lovely Georgina Critchley.

Well, one thing led to another (including more then once my dad "thumbed a ride" from Georgia to Paterson NJ to see my mom. How ever infrequent the dating was due to the war effort and the geographic distance, something worked because he married Georgina Mae Critchley on October 5, 1945, in Paterson, Passaic county, New Jersey at Broadway Baptist Church (in Paterson).

They had two children during their marriage: my sister Jacquelyn Gail Van Duren (married name Simmons) on April 1, 1947 and me, Robert "Cookie" Keith Van Duren six years later on April 15, 1953. (In between those years my mother miscarried in around 1949, what would have been her second child. According to my mom's info, when she and my dad lived in a basement apartment (see below for address), the mean landlord TOLD/YELLED My mom to take down her quilt of the backyard clothes line. The quilt was super heavy and due to the strain, she miscarried).

In 1949 Bill, Georgina, and 2 year old Jacquie lived in a basement apartment at 132 N Main St, Paterson, NJ (one block in from Haledon Ave); at the time, they were candy makers with Georgina's parents, Joseph and Georgina Critchley at Critchley's Home Made Candy on N. Straight Street, Paterson New Jersey.

CPL William "Bill" Van Duren went to Heaven on April 23, 2003, about seven years after his wife, in Festus, Missouri, at the age of 83, dying from complications of Alzheimer's. I know he got so lonely for my mom, that he HAD TO join her in Heaven. That, and the knowledge that both my sister and I had birthdays in April. He was buried in Jefferson National Cemetery with full Military honors, in Lemay, Missouri (near St. Louis) next to the ashes of his wife. My mother died from cancer of the kidneys and bladder.

William "Bill" Van Duren is survived by two children, Jacquie (Van Duren) Simmons (Paul), and me, Robert "Cookie" Keith VanDuren (Elaine), three grandchildren, one step grandson, ten great grandchildren one step great granddaughter, also many nieces, and nephews, and friends.

MORE INFORMATION COMING.
This is a "Work in progress". 😀💞💜
UPDATE: Look at the 5 new photos (on the upper right) I added to my dad's FindAGrave Memorial page here. Including, a photo of his U.S. Army Air Corps Band.
