INDICTED WITH 13 AS LEPKE AID; SHOT TO DEATH
New York, April 17 (AP). -- One of 14 persons indicted by a Brooklyn federal grand jury today for harboring Racketeer Louis [Lepke] Buchalter was shot to death tonight on a Manhattan street. Police said an unidentified gunman fired three shots into Sidney [Skimmy] Salles and escaped.
The indictment accused Salles, 11 other men, and two women of harboring Buchalter, now serving 14 years in Leavenworth prison as a narcotic law violator, for 16 months before his capture.
Salles was one of five named in the indictment not yet arrested. Benjamin [Bugs] Siegal, who was freed of a murder charge in Los Angeles last December, was arrested there, and Moe [Dimples] Wolinsky and Benjamin [Cutty] Kutlowitz were arrested in Hollywood, Fla.
Buchalter also faces a 30 year term in New York as a result of conviction of extortion in the bakery and trucking rackets.
