William Russell Mellott had a water powered mill on the Owl Creek Branch of Licking Creek. The location was 1/2 mile west of the village of Andover. The mill stood idle for 50 years and is now owned by Donald and Betty (Mellott) Swope in 1997. William Russell Mellott also farmed and kept honey bees. The mill location was a good one because of the large amount of buckwheat grown in the region. Buckwheat grew well along the Tonoloway creek and its tributaries. Richer soils did not suit it as well. The skill of the millers produced a special buckwheat flour that was marketed through Hancock, Maryland first by canal boats and later by railroads. Much of this flour found it's way into European markets.
Bill Mellott was a part time blacksmith and did carpenter work as well
