Son of John & Eliza (Lee) Burtis
Husband of Sarah Cleveland

"The ride from Salem to Washington was a grand excursion for the boys, and they enjoyed it most heartily. But to one poor soldier it was his last. Evander Burtis, a soldier in Co. A, from Greenwich, was taken sick while on the way and left in the hospital at Philadelphia, where he died on the 9th of September, 1862. His remains were taken home and deposited in the beautiful Cemetery at Salem. He was the last man who enlisted in the company and the first one to die." - Morhous' Reminiscences, 1879
