Alex enlisted in the U.S. Army on 16 Jun 1898 during the Spanish American War (19th Infantry, Company K) serving in Lares, Puerto Rico. He was discharged on 18 Apr 1899 with his service noted as "Excellent". Alex married Martha Miotka on 7 Sep 1903 in Detroit and they had 7 children total. Alex worked as a painter until his life was cut short when he died from tuberculosis on 13 May 1918 at the age of 38. Martha died just 9 months later at the age of 35 from pneumonia resulting from the Spanish Flu Epidemic. They were survived by 4 children - Alexander Daniel, George, Elsie Valeria and my grandmother Florence.
