Abolitionist, Physician, Scholar, Religious Leader. Along with being the town physician, Dr. Blanchard served as a bondsman to allow blacks to set up residence in the town. Blanchard’s residence was used as a safe house and Blanchard served as a conductor,his home was the first stop in free territory for the Underground Railway. Blanchard Cemetery was named in 1864 after Ira's wife Mary passed away.The cemetery was only a few hundred yards from the Blanchard family home. The inscription on his tombstone reads "The Lord will perfect that which concerneth me."--38 Psalm of 8 Verse
