Samuel was the brother of Margaret Ann Gaston Kell (1783-1831), Ann Gaston Rainey(1784-1867), William Gaston II (1786-1869), John Rankin Gaston (1795-1840), Elizabeth Gaston Carson (1796-1845), Mary Ann Gaston White Hillhouse (1798-1843).
Education played an important part in Samuel's life by his Scots-Irish Presbyterian parents and attended the College of Charleston at the age of sixteen; where he studied law. In 1805, Samuel married his second cousin, Esther Waugh Gaston, daughter of John Gaston II and Jannet (née Knox) Gaston. John's parents were known American patriots during the Revolutionary war and charter members of Burnt Meeting House in Chester, South Carolina. During their years together, Samuel and Esther had nine children.
Around 1809 Samuel and Esther emigrated west; first settling in the Indiana Territory. In 1811, Samuel enlisted in the 4th Regiment of the Indiana Militia-mounted Rifles and served there through the War of 1811/1812.
By early 1818, Samuel had moved the family to Jefferson County Illinois and had purchase over 16,000 acres of land. Here he farmed and lived out his days.
Samuel Gaston died on March 1st 1826 at the young age of 38 years old.
