S. A. Lynch of College Dies at Age 86

CEDAR FALLS - Samuel Adams Lynch, 86, a member of Iowa State Teachers College faculty for 37 years, died Sunday night in Sartori Memorial hospital, where he had been a patient several days following surgery. His death was due to a heart attack, a member of his family said. He had not been ill and was in good health when he entered the hospital a week ago.

Professor Lynch was head of the English department from 1909 to 1938, when he retired at age 70. Afterward he taught for eight years as professor emeritus, teaching a course in Shakespeare, which was his specialty.

He was a charter member of the National Association of Teachers of English and also a number of other professional groups, including the National Education Association. In late years he was copy writer for various religious publications. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, where he was ruling elder many years.

TO CEDAR FALLS IN 1909

When Professor Lynch came to Cedar Falls in 1909 the college was just being organized into departments and it had just been changed from Iowa State Normal School to Iowa State Teachers College. Dr. Homer H. Seerly was president of the college at that time.

Before coming to Cedar Falls Professor Lynch was principal of Central High School at Superior, Wis., and also of the Superior State Teachers College.

He was born on a farm in Madison county, Illinois, Aug. 27, 1868. He graduated from the University of Missouri with a Bachelor's degree and took his MA degree at the University of Chicago in 1900.

During his early years at ISTC, Professor Lynch was general supervisor of 14 incorporated literary societies at the school. He also organized three chapters of national honorary fraternities.

The school here was much interested in international debate in those days and teams of debaters from Britain and Canada came to Cedar Falls to debate ISTC teams.

FUNERAL WEDNESDAY

Surviving in addition to his widow are four children, E. B. Lynch, superintendent of schools at Red Oak; Dr. Gladys lynch, member of the department of speech at the University of Iowa; William D. Lynch, head of the Woolverton Printing Co. here, and John E. Lynch, Lincoln, Neb., fieldman for the Nebraska State Education Association.

There are seven grandchildren and two great grand children. Also surviving are a sister and brother. Mrs. Lee Stevinson, Tulsa, Okla., and John H. Lynch of South Bend, Ind.

The funeral service will be at First Presbyterian church at 2 p. m. Wednesday, conducted by the Rev. George Steele. Burial will be in Greenwood cemetery.

The body is at the Dahl funeral home.

Both are actually interred at Greenview Cemetery mausoleum, Cedar Rapids Iowa
