Mining engineer. Son of John Hutton, Jr., and Mary Gaffney. Married Frances Madeleine King (1917); father of: Mary Patricia Hutton (1918-) Frances Madeleine Hutton (1919-), and Meritt Hutton, Jr. (1920-1920). Married Katherine DeBarth Townsend (1921): father of Kathryn May Hutton (1922-), Dorothy Lillian Hutton (1924-), William Thomas Hutton (1928-), and Suzanne Townsend Hutton (1933-). Graduate of the Colorado School of Mines. President of local School District # 12 in Adams County, Colorado. Donated land upon which the Meritt Hutton Junior Senior High School was constructed on the east side of North Washington Street-opened September, 1956, in Thornton, Colorado, to provide educational services and opportunities for the then rapidly growing development. The school was converted to an exclusively junior high in 1974, and the building was demolished in the early 1990's. The current Thornton High School, 9351 North Washington Street, was constructed in the 1970's and is west of Washington Street-across from where the Meritt Hutton building stood.
Services for Meritt Hutton conducted at Fairmount, Denver, and ashes were given to the family.
