She was born in Alton, Illinois, December 15, 1868, the youngest of seven children, and at baptism was named Emma. Her parents, Anthony Federle and Barbara Schnell, were natives of Baden, Germany. She never knew her parents and did not know when they emigrated. At the tender age of ten, on September 1, 1878, Emma entered the convent at Alton, Illinois where she remained for two years. After she had received her First Holy Communion she went to the Milwaukee Aspiranture (convent high school) for two more years of study. In 1883 when but fourteen years old, our sainted Mother M. Caroline sent her to St. Michael's, Minnesota where she remained for twenty-four years. January 9, 1946 she was taken to St. Joseph Hospital in Milwaukee for x-rays which revealed gastric cancer and myocarditis. In preparation for surgery, January 18, a blood transfusion was given. The operation seemed successful, but on February 1st, she asked to be anointed again. Her anemic condition caused her usual ruddy face to resemble white marble and it was evident that she was suffering much. June 7 at 6:30 pm she was anointed a third time, and while her former choir sang the Laudate Dominum at the close of the First Friday evening devotions, she calmly breathed her last when the final strains were dying away at 7:20 PM. She was buried June 10, 1946. A niece from Menasha, Wisconsin attended her funeral. May she rest in peace!
