Euphemia Nicol Murray was born to Michael and Euphemia (Effie) (Borthwick) Nicol in Scotland on Jun 24, 1850. According to the 1860 Illinois census Michael (55), Euphemia (Effie) (50), James (22), Christopher (18), Mathew (15), Martha Jane (12), and Euphemia (10) were all born in Scotland and lived in Hadley Township, Pike County, Illinois. There were two older siblings, William Nicol and Mary Nicol Carroll, who were already married and living in the area. The family immigrated from Scotland in 1852. John and Eupemia (Nicol) Murray, marriage 8 Sep 1874, Pike County, Illinois. The Nicol family were basket makers and bagpipe players. In Scotland they were shepherds of sheep. In Illinois they were farmers, gardeners, and basket makers. The last name is spelled Nicol, Nichol, and Nichols. Her mother's name has also been found as Borthnigh and Borthham, but the correct spelling is Borthwick.
