Deceased Name: Her ingredients for success: 'Time and a little patience' DELLA AMODEO, 108 Date of Death 06/30/2004 Owned Island delicatessen, Manhattan restaurant
Della Amodeo, 108, a longtime Staten Island resident and business owner, died June 30 in St. Joseph's Guest House, a health care facility for the aged operated by the Missionary Sisters of St. Benedict in Huntington, L.I., where she had resided for the past 12 years.

Born Della Barbieri in 1896 in Monte Bruno, Italy, Mrs. Amodeo was brought to the United States as a young child, and lived with her family in Lower Manhattan.

After her marriage, she and her husband, Charles Amodeo, moved to Grasmere in 1930 and then to Arrochar in 1939, where they lived for the next 21 years.

Mrs. Amodeo also had lived in Oakwood for two years before returning to Grasmere, where she lived for 16 years before moving to Long Island and finally settling at St. Joseph's Guest House.

From 1930 to 1941, she and her husband were co-owners of Andy's Restaurant on Pearl Street in Manhattan. Later, they opened Amodeo's Delicatessen on Richmond Road in Dongan Hills, which they ran until her husband's death in 1961.

Noted for her cooking skills, Mrs. Amodeo was particularly adept in preparing specialties from Genoa and the region of Piedmont, where her own family and that of her husband originated.

An article about Mrs. Amodeo that appeared in the Advance in April 1978, quoted her advice on cooking: "Time and a little patience is all you need," she said as she prepared homemade pasta for a reporter and photographer along with her sisters, Mary and Julia Barbieri.

"She was quite a personality, always ready to take control and get things done," said a close family friend, Ernest Milza of Grasmere.

Mrs. Amodeo is survived by several nieces and nephews.

The Brueggeman Funeral Home in East Northport, L.I., handled the arrangements. Burial was Friday in St. Peter's Cemetery, West Brighton.
