D.A. Sears, Estherville, Dead at 77
D.A. Sears, 77, of Estherville, longtime employee of the local gas company, died today at 5:58 a.m. at Holy Family Hospital. Death was caused by cancer and other complications.

Mr. Sears had been ill for about four years and seriously ill since March 4. He had been hospitalized both at Holy Family Hospital and in the Sioux Falls Veterans Hospital.

Dora Alfred Sears was born Oct. 14, 1890 [per WWI Draft Records, 1891] to George and Eliza Sears. He received his education in the schools at Salina, Kan.

He was married Dec. 24, 1919, to Bertha Swan at Minneapolis, Kan. Mr. Sears worked for Peoples (Northern) Natural Gas Co., at Weeping Willow, Kan., Jackson, Minn., and in 1941 moved to Estherville. He retired in 1955 after 25 years of service with the company. Mrs. Sears died March 16, 1957.

Mr. Sears was a veteran of World War I and was a member of the First Christian Church and American Legion.

On April 18, 1962, he was married to Ruth Yates Sawyer and they had continued to make their home here.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth, a son, Alfred E. Sears of Parma, Ohio, three daughters, Mrs. Bob (La Vonne) Day and Mrs. Eldon (Dorothy) Elwood, both of Estherville and Mrs. Eugene (Frances) Eike of Crystal Lake, Ill., 11 grandchildren, one great-grandson and three brothers, Clarence of Lawrence, Ks., Roger [?] and Wallace[?] of Salina, Ks.
