William was the first to receive the gospel in York . He was baptized on January 1, 1840 . About 18 months later he became the presiding elder over York and Thirsk Branches . He left, with his wife and two children, for Nauvoo in 1843 . They were in the exodus from Nauvoo and spent several years in Iowa and Missouri trying to get supplies to go west. After their arrival in the Valley, they settled in Salt Lake . In 1856 he, along with some others, went to the aid of the Willey Handcart Company. He took an active part in the militia during the Johnston Army problems. In 1861 , they were called to help raise cotton in Dixie . He was active in the church and in the community, being elected Justice of the Peace and Treasurer for the city of St. George . In 1863 he helped cut rock for the St. George Temple and tabernacle.
