Gardner Gale was a son of John Gale and Eunice Bancroft. He visited the mid-west in 1825, staying for two years and then returning to Vermont. He came back following the Civil War, bringing his family, and settled in Lake County, Illinois.

Gardner married (1) Sophronia Smith. They had three children: George (1812), Clara E. (1833) and Sophronia (who were raised by their grandparents after their father's remarriage.

Gardner married (2) Louisa Williams October 11, 1836 at Williamstown, Orange County, Vermont.
Gardner and Louisa had five children:

John W. (1840)
Wallace H. (1842)
Louisa H. (1844)
Emma S. (1846)
