PETER GARLOCH "GARLOW"

----------------------
DIED
GARLOW.--On April 2, 1877, at the residence of his son, William H. Garlow, of disease of the liver, Peter Garlow, in the 73d year of his age.

(the above article, was in the 'Bryan Press' on April 5, 1877-page 3/column 2-Bryan, Williams County, Ohio)

DIED.
GARLOCH.--On Monday morning, April 2nd, after a long illness, Peter Garloch, aged 72 years.
Mr. Garloch was born and raised in Pennsylvania. lived many years in Ohio but for ten years preceding last October had lived in Iowa. He moved here in October, was soon after taken sick and gradually grew worse until death called him away.
___
(the above article was from the Bryan Democrat, April 5, 1877, page 5/column 4)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Peter' tombstone says he died in 1875, his death notice in the newspaper article has his correct death date of 1877. This current stone, was 'possibly' added years later, when his son William H., and William' wife, Ruth had died, as they are both included on stone.
Seems the wrong year of death for Peter was then placed on this 'new' stone, which 'could' have been placed up to 43 years later.
Peter went by the last name of Garlow for most of his life, starting at least by the 1830 census, but it was actually Garloch, which was misspelled by some county clerks, etc. as Garlock, which has the same pronunciation. Several of his childrens' marriage documents, etc., listed their last name as Garloch; including all of Peter's son, William H. Garloch, Civil War military documents.
*But, William was also known by both Garlow, and Garloch, as his father had been.
*Have now received 2 new views of the family Lot 42 at the cemetery. Peter's grave is actually the 1st smaller marker to the right of the Urn marker. It only says "FATHER". His grave #2 was verified by the cemetery.
-----------------
The marriage of this 'Peter Garlock' to their 'Kate Cuppett', is listed on the Cuppett family history page in the book ' The History of Preston County' Virginia (West).
Catharine died on Sept.28, 1861 in Thornville, Perry county, Ohio.
She and Peter had 12 children together, 6 boys and 6 girls.
-----------------
During the War, widower, Peter, and some of his adult children moved to Defiance & Williams county Ohio.
A second marriage of Peter Garloch was on February 15, 1864 in Defiance county. He married Elizabeth Clinker, widow of Samuel Clinker who had died in 1854.
This marriage ended in a divorce in Defiance county in 1867.
-----------------
Have not as of yet, found the names of this Peter's parents or any of his siblings.
Peter was born in 1805 in Maryland. His parents must have come over from Germany in the mid to late 1700's.
The descendants family story handed down, is that two brothers came over from Germany, and they became separated when in the U.S., and the two lines became completely separated.
-----------------
The family history of a Henry Garlock, born 1807 in Washington Co, Maryland, is quite similar in that two brothers came from Germany, and the two lines became separated in the U.S., and the spelling of the last names became different in the two lines.
Their family history shows that a son of one of the two brothers was named Henry Garlock, born 1807; he became an orphan at the age of about two years.
The info of the father and grandfather of this Henry are known to the current descendants.
***************************
This Henry, is the same Henry Garlock, that married Esther Cuppett, the **sister** of this Peter's wife Kate (Catharine or Katherine) Cuppett.
This Henry's marriage is also listed on the same page of the Cuppet family history, in the book 'The History of Preston County'-Virginia (West).
*In the book, the wife of Henry is listed as Harriet, not sure if it was a later mistake, by the author, or if Esther was also called Harriet, or a middle name?
-
Henry Garlock with wife and children, and this memorial page's Peter Garlock with wife and children, both lived in Preston County Virginia, close to the Cuppet family, for a few years.
***************************
Is it possible that this Henry Garlock and this Peter Garlock (Garloch, Garlow), are orphaned brothers?
This Henry went by the last name of Garlock, and his descendants still went by that last name into semi-modern times.
'If' it can be proved that they are brothers or are related somehow, then we may have the parents of this Peter, or at least more information, with which to continue the search .
**Perhaps a D.N.A. test of the current descendants, would provide the answer.
--------------------
***Henry was also later found on www.findagrave.com at: Henry Garloch, and also his wife, Esther Cuppet.
We have been able to link the two Cuppet sisters, Catharine and Esther, with their parents on findagrave, and also with their other siblings.
(According to Peter's obituary, he had moved to Iowa for 10 years before his death date of 1877. I have not been able to find him on any census in 1870 in Iowa or Ohio.
*Interesting, is a newspaper ad in Williams County, Ohio, not too long before his death in Williams county, placed by a Elizabeth Garlock "seeking information on the location of Peter Garlock, possibly in Defiance Co. or Williams Co., involving their pending divorce.
Peter had remarried and divorced in Defiance county, Ohio before his time in Iowa,; then had returned to Williams county, Ohio in Oct. 1876 to live with his son, but soon died there at his son's home.
Seems Peter had left for Iowa, either just before, or just after the divorce filing date in Oct. 1866.
(Have not yet found what had happened to daughter, Elvira, after the 1870 Census with her working in the Shelly family household. The Shelly family were later buried there at a Thornville cemetery.
Also, have not found what had happened to son, John H., after the 1860 Census. This would be at the time of the Civil War; and John's brother, William H., enlisted at Thornville in a new infantry company started by neighbor, Captain Reuben Lampton.
Some of the descendants of Peter's son, Perry C., had said that Peter was a very young drummer-boy in the War. He was buried with the G.A.R. symbol on his grave; 'Grand Army of The Republic' Civil War veterans organization.)
Any information on the above would be welcomed, along with any photos of the Garlow-Garloch family members.
Also have been trying for years to find the burial location of the grandfather (Frederick Spahr) of Peter's wife, Catharine Cuppet. He was a Revolutinary War veteran from Pennsylvania.
*For family descendants, many of his court documents (handwritten with signatures) are still available, as he applied at a very elderly age for a Pennsylvania land grant for his 1776 military service, while he was living in Virginia close to his daughter,Susannah, and son-in-law, John Cuppet (who helped with the application's many court documents).
