Zella Dysart, daughter of Samuel Andrew Dysart and Elizabeth Higbee, was born in Lancaster, Missouri, on November 4, 1881. She attended Phoenix High School, Oberlin College in Ohio where she studied music, and San Jose Normal School where she received her teaching degree.

Zella kept a diary of a trip by covered wagon from Phoenix to the Grand Canyon with her siblings, which was published in 1996 as "Summer Sojourn to the Grand Canyon - the 1898 diary of Zella Dysart". In Phoenix on August 6, 1908, she married George Walton Vaughn, who was in the grocery business. George and Zella had four children; Dr. Louis Dysart Vaughn , Dr. George W. Vaughn, Jr. , Virginia Ann Vaughn Tigar and Dr. John F. Vaughn and ten grandchildren. She was a teacher, homemaker and member of the Christian Church.
