Indian Mutiny Victoria Cross Medal Recipient. He served as a Sergeant in the 1st Battalion, 13th Foot, British Army. At Azimghur, India, April 6, 1858, Sergeant Napier saw a Private lying severely wounded and went to his rescue. Surrounded by Sepoys he bandaged Private Milnes wounds and was shot leaving a gaping wound over his left eye. He continued to fight back until he finally picked up the Private and carried him to safety. For bravery in action he was awarded the Victoria Cross Medal and offered an officer's commission which he declined instead to except a promotion to Sergeant Major.
