World War I Victoria Cross Medal Recipient. He served as a Sergeant in the 22nd Battalion of the Victoria Australian Imperial Forces. At Ville-sur-Ancre, France, May 19, 1918, Sergeant Ruthven's company suffered many casualties and his company commander was severely wounded. He then assumed command of the company in leading a bayonet assault on a forward German machine gun position. He rushed to the post captured the gun, wounded two of the enemy and took six prisoners. When he observed enemy movement on a road nearby he went armed only with a revolver, shot two enemy and single-handedly captured thirty-two men. For most prestigious courage in the face of the enemy, he was awarded the Victoria Cross Medal and later achieved the rank of Major.
