Peter Hoerner, an aged resident of Hummelstown passed away Sunday morning at 5 o'clock at the home of his son-in-law, Levi Habecker, in that borough. Deceased was aged 87 years and 9 days and was for many years a farmer in South Hanover township. He was a veteran of the Civil War and a member of the Lutheran church. The following children survive: Henry C. of South Hanover Township, William H. of Lower Paxton Township, Mrs. Barbara M. Rhoads of Benton City Missouri, Mrs. Elizabeth Habecker of Hummelstown and Mrs. Anna Walters of Penbrook. The funeral was held Thursday morning at 9:30 o'clock at the house, Revs. Gearhart of Mechanicsburg and Smith of Hummelstown officiating. Interment was made at Hummelstown.

In 1860, he was a farmer presumably living in Lower Swatara Township, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, but he is not found in that year's census. He stood 5' 8" tall and had sandy hair and blue eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he first enrolled July 4, 1863, as a corporal with Co. E, 36th Pennsylvania Militia, and honorably discharged with his company August 11, 1863. The accompanying photo in his uniform must have been taken during this period. He then enlisted in Harrisburg March 9, 1865, mustered into federal service there March 10 as a private with the second organization of Co. D, 101st Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company June 25, 1865.
