Frederick was born in Spiesen, Saar, Rheenish Prussia, Germany. He and his father Nicholas (b. 1781) and brothers Peter (b. 1819) and Ludwig (b. 1822) immigrated on the ship Lorena from LeHavre, France, arriving in the U.S. on Nov. 10, 1836. They settled in Pennsylvania. Older sister Louisa (b. 1800), her husband Nicholas Bish, older brother Nicholas (b. 1811), and younger sister Mary had immigrated three years earlier on the ship "Henrette & Marie" from LeHavre, France, arriving in NY on Aug. 3, 1833. Sometime between 1850-1956, this "first-to-immigrate" group left Pennsylvania and relocated to Jasper County, IA.
