His wife, whom he married in 1784 was from a very infuential family. She was Jane Thornton,esquire, which meant she was a granddaughter of a Lord, but her father was a second son. Alexander was the 9th Lord of Monmouth and 6th Earl of Melville.

Isabell died 11~December~1880, we think she is buried to the left of Arthur Metcalf tombstone in the Dixon Run Cemetery in Jackson Co Ohio. There is an empty space next to Arthur's grave.
