Alice R. Holmes, affectionately known as "Ganny," was born on May 2, 1908 in Culpeper, Virginia to the late Annie Bell & Wesley Jeffries.

[NOTE FROM DWAYNE: After the death of Alice Holmes, we learned that she was actually born four (4) years prior, in 1904]

Ganny received her education in the public schools of Lignum, Virginia. In the year of 1953, Ganny moved to Baltimore, Maryland. Ganny met and married the late Gordon Holmes, and from this union one daughter, Mildred, was born. Ganny later adopted a special daughter, Doris Jenkins. Ganny worked as a domestic worker until she retired to raise her granddaughter, LaTrenda Winston. Ganny also assisted in raising her great-grandson, Jarrod Lewis.

Ganny joined the Mt. Calvary Free Will Baptist Church in the year of 1957. She was a long-standing member of the Senior Choir. In the year of 2000, Ganny was ordained an Honorary Mother of the church. Ganny made numerous friends and adopted many children and grandchildren in the community and church.

Ganny leaves to cherish her memory: two dauthers, Mildred Holmes (deceased) and Doris Jenkins. Seventeen grandchildren, twenty-seven great-grandchildren, ten great-great grandchildren; Constance Price (Burlington, VA), Olivia Williams (Baltimore, MD), Judson Jeffries (Lignum, VA), Mildred O'Neal (Elkins Park, PA), Chester Jeffries (Elkins Park, VA); Godson, Albert Greene, Jr.; a host of other nieces, nephews, cousins and devoted friends of the community.
