Robert E. Wabel, 63, of Decatur died 4:17 p.m. Thursday (April 5, 2001) in Barnes Jewish Hospital, St. Louis, Mo.

He was born in DeKalb County on May 22, 1937, the son of Lewis P. and Grace E. Miles Wabel. He was president and founder of Wabel Tool Company. In 1993, he received the private sector award from the Illinois Department of Community Affairs. He served on the Education to Careers Board, having co-chaired from 1996 to the present. He was on the Manufacturing Advisory Board for Heartland Region-Technical Academy from 1995 to 1998. He assisted in restoring the Machine Tool Tech program at DAVC in 1997 and continued to support and provide assistance. He served on the Macon-DeWitt Private Industry Counsel as a board member from 1990 to 1998. He was a former village trustee of Mount Zion and a member of Society of Manufacturing Engineers and Tabernacle Baptist Church. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed fishing. He married Nancy Sue Jividen on Sept. 28, 1957.

Surviving are his wife; two daughters, one son, three brothers, one sister, and two grandchildren.
