Actor, Model. He was best known for playing the character roles of heroes. He will be best remembered for playing the lead role of the character 'Spartacus' in thirteen episodes of the action-adventure biographical television series, "Spartacus: Blood And Sand" in 2010, which also starred Lucy Lawless and Manu Bennett. He is also remembered for playing the role of 'Spartacus' with his voice only in the prequel television mini-series, "Spartacus: Gods Of The Arena" (2011), which also starred John Hannah, Manu Bennett, and Peter Mensah. He was born one of two children as Andrew Whitfield in Amlwch, Anglesey, Wales, to Robert Whitfield and his wife Pat Whitfield on October 17, 1971. He was educated locally and attended Ysgol Syr Thomas Jones Community School, a mixed bilingual school for pupils between 11 and 18 years in Pentrefelin, Isle of Anglesey, Wales. He later studied engineering at the prestigious Sheffield Hallam University in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, and later worked as an engineer and building inspector for a consulting agency. During this time he also became a fashion model and he took part in approximately 40 advertising campaigns in Europe and Asia. He later moved to Lidcombe, New South Wales, Australia, to pursue an acting career beginning in 1999. He eventually settled in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, where he also attended and studied acting at the Screenwise Film & TV School for Actors. He made his actual film debut playing the lead role of 'Gabriel' in the action fantasy horror film of the same name, "Gabriel" (2007). The film which was directed and written by Shane Abbess, which was also written for the screen by Matt Hylton Todd, and which also starred Dwaine Stevenson, Samantha Noble, Michael Piccirilli, Erika Heynatz, and Jack Campbell, tells the story of Gabriel the archangel who fights to bring light back to purgatory - a place where darkness rules - and save the souls of the city's inhabitants. Besides, playing the lead role of the character 'Spartacus' in thirteen episodes of the action-adventure biographical television series, "Spartacus" in 2010, which also starred Lucy Lawless and Manu Bennett, and for playing the role of 'Spartacus' with his voice only in the prequel television mini-series, "Spartacus: Gods Of The Arena" (2011), which also starred John Hannah, Manu Bennett, and Peter Mensah, his many other television credits include, "All Saints," "Out Of The Blue," "Red Eye w/Tom Shillue," "Project: Comic-Con," "Chelsea Lately," "The Strip," "Packed To The Rafters," and "McLeod's Daughters." Besides, "Gabriel" (2007), his only other film credit was playing the role of 'Cameron' in the mystery crime horror film, "The Clinic" (2010). The film which was also his last was directed and written by James Rabbitts, and which also starred Tabrett Bethell, Freya Stafford, Clare Bowen, and Marshall Napier, tells the story of while traveling across the country with her fiancé, Beth wakes alone in an isolated clinic to find her unborn baby has been removed. Just how far will she go to get her child back? He was also a creator along with the Internet celebrity, filmmaker, VFX artist, podcaster, and competitive gamer Freddie Wong of a 2-minute YouTube video named "Time Crisis," which is based on the video game series of the same name in 2010. His promising acting career was cut short when he was diagnosed with stage IV non-Hodgkin lymphoma, a form of cancer in March of 2010. He began receiving chemotherapy immediately following his diagnosis in New Zealand. At the time of his cancer diagnosis he was to reprise his role of 'Spartacus' for the third time in season two of "Spartacus: Vengeance," but the production was put on hold. This contributed to his voice only role as 'Spartacus' in the prequel television mini-series, "Spartacus: Gods Of The Arena" (2011), while he was receiving treatment. He was declared cancer-free in June of 2010 but the cancer was found to have returned during a routine check-up in September of 2010. After his final cancer diagnosis, he quit acting and the future role of 'Spartacus' went to the actor Liam McIntyre who was cast in the role. He continued to receive treatment for his cancer and he passed away in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, a year later on September 11, 2011, at the age of 39. His funeral service and cremation were held at the Rookwood Memorial Gardens and Crematorium in Rookwood, Cumberland Council, New South Wales, Australia. His ashes were then scattered in three different locations — Bondi Beach, the Blue Mountains, and North Wales, where his parents live. He was married to the documentary filmmaker Vashti Whitfield from October 2001 until his death in September 2011. The couple had two children together, Indigo and Ashley. His wife Vashti Whitfield, created the documentary film, "Be Here Now: The Andy Whitfield Story" (2015), which follows his and his family's journey and struggle as he undergoes chemotherapy treatment for non-Hodgkin Lymphoma, a form of cancer. In the documentary film which is described as though life is imitating art, actor, and sex symbol, Andy Whitfield, had just become a star as the lead in the hit television series, 'Spartacus,' when he is faced with his biggest personal challenge - life-threatening cancer. 'Be Here Now' is a feature documentary that follows him on his dramatic journey to cure himself. Confirmed in matching affirmative tattoos, he and his charismatic wife and their two children, commit to taking Andy's healing into their own hands and living life fully, not in the shadows of the disease. Each step tests their limits and strength of character while revealing their tenderness, humor, and determination. And, as each person goes through their own transformations, the film becomes an inspiring and universal story of courage, love, and resilience. The documentary film was also shown on Netflix and at the Los Angeles Film Festival in Los Angeles, California, in 2015.
