Eliza Fitzgerald Lahff was born on May 8, 1844, in Poulawack, Iscankullen, Ireland. Her father, was Patrick Fitzgerald, a herd in the Burren. Her mother was Bridget Walsh.
She married John Lahiff (Flahy) Lahiff on April 30, 1864 at the Carron Catholic Chapel (St. Columba's). In February of 1865, she and John boarded the ship "Berar" bound for New Zealand. Eliza was 7 months pregnant. While on the voyage, she gave birth to her first child Bridget on March 17, 1865. The birth is recorded in the "Diary of the Voyage of the Ship Berar". They arrived into Wellington Harbor on May 8, and remained in New Zealand for 18 months. During that time she gave birth to Catherine "Kate" their second child. Shortly after Catherine's baptism, they boarded ship "Dover Castle" and returned to Ireland. Together, they had 10 children. They lived and worked in the Burren, traveled to America twice and finally settled in Newport, Rhode Island. Eliza died on June 6, 1899 at the age of 55, and was buried in Middletown, Rhode Island. She was a woman of strength and dignity.
