Joseph DeStefano, age 91, a lifelong resident of Glassboro, passed away on April 29, 2011 in Vineland, NJ. Beloved husband of 54 years to the late Marian (nee Smith). Loving father of Karen DeStefano-Last (Fred) of West Deptford, Joanne of Glassboro, and Joseph (Barbara) of Mullica Hill. Devoted grandfather of Anthony and Paul. Also survived by sisters-in-law, Ethel Lindle, Margaret Rhodes and Ida Mae Miller, and many nieces and nephews.
Joe was the youngest son of Pantaleone and Antoinette DeStefano and was pre-deceased by his siblings Nicholas DeStefano, Anthony DeStefano, Paul DeStefano, Philomena Ficca, Anna Goetter and Mary Simei.
Joe enlisted in the US Navy in 1942 and proudly served during WWII until his honorable discharge in 1946. He served aboard the USS YMS-17 (a minesweeper) during the Normandy invasion and earned his campaign medal and operations star for service in the European-African-Middle Eastern Area Theatre. He received a Certificate of Appreciation honoring WWII Veterans from Gloucester County in 1995 and received the Military Service Medal presented by the Gloucester County Board of Chosen Freeholders to Gloucester County veterans at a ceremony in 2001.
An ornamental ironworker, he owned and operated D & D Iron Works in Glassboro for 40 years. He was one of the earliest employees at Owens-Illinois in Glassboro and ended his career at DuPont's in Deepwater. Upon his retirement, Joe loved the outdoors maintaining his lawn and beautiful flowers. He was a fun-loving family man who loved nothing more than a party with family and friends.
He was an active member of St. Bridget's Church in Glassboro and the Glassboro VFW Post 679 until he moved to the Veteran's Memorial Home in Vineland in 2007 where he was a staff favorite and lovingly cared for by all his aides, nurses and doctors.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, May 4, 2011 at 11 AM at St. Bridget's Church, 125 Church Street, Glassboro, where family and friends may call after 10 AM. Burial will be in Manahath Cemetery in Glassboro.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Bridget's Church. Arrangements under the direction of MATHIS FUNERAL HOME, Glassboro, NJ.
